After four wins in a row to start the Eurocup season, Bourg-en-Bresse lost for the first time, at home against Bursaspor (80-89).
Two French teams faced Bursa clubs on Tuesday in the European Basketball Cup, and Bourg-en-Bresse did not experience the same success as Strasbourg. If the SIG won the Champions League against Tofas Bursa, the JL lost at home against Bursaspor in the Eurocup (the second European Cup in the continental hierarchy).
The Turks came to win 80-89 in Ain and inflicted on Frédéric Fauthoux’s players their first defeat in the competition, after four victories in a row. Bourg was weighed down by his very poor start to the match and an incredible 21-0 (5 shots from 3 points) conceded between the 4th and 9th minutes. Bursa were leading 30-17 at the end of the first quarter, but Bourg finally woke up and put together a good second quarter to come back to 41-45 at halftime.
Bursa best in last quarter
On their way, the Burgiens passed in the 34th (51-50), then the two teams took control in turn (67-65, 30th). The JL then led 69-68 with 8’50 remaining, and that was the last time they were ahead on the scoreboard. The Turks indeed managed the end of the match very well and widened the gap little by little, to finally win by nine points, in the wake of a David Dudzinski to 20 points.
On the Bourg side, it was James Palmer Jr who finished top scorer, with 20 points, and Pierre Pelos also had a good game, with 16 points and 7 rebounds, in vain… Despite this first defeat, Bourg remains at the top of group A before going to his runner-up, Badalone, next week. There are still 13 games to play in this group stage at the end of which only two teams out of ten will be eliminated.
Burgian markers: Benitez (6), Courby (3), Massenat (8), Floyd (14), Palmer Jr (20), Pelos (16), Mike (9), Kokila (2), Julien (2)
