The president of the Slovenian Basketball Federation has announced that superstar Luka Doncic will play the World Cup in Asia in August-September 2023.
Since last Monday, like France, Spain or China, Slovenia has won its ticket for the 2023 World Cup, which will be held in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia from August 25 to 10. september. This will be the fourth participation for the small European country (2.1 million inhabitants), after ninth place in 2006, eighth in 2010 and seventh in 2014. In 2023, the Slovenians, fourth in the last Olympics, dream of going even further, and they can count on a certain Luka Doncic for this. The Dallas player, who will turn 24 in February, has indeed confirmed his participation in the major world event.
« Luka confirmed his participation one minute after the game against Germany on Monday, as soon as he was sure that we would go to the world championshiprevealed the president of the Slovenian Basketball Federation Matej Erjavec. To be very honest, we were already 99% sure after the previous Friday’s game against Israel, but despite everything, it was a great joy and a comfort at the same time. If Luka is healthy, there is nothing to be afraid of (of a package). His attitude is truly amazing. It was 6 a.m. in Dallas when there was the game against Israel. He watched this game. It’s not the easiest thing to get up at 6am to watch a game when you have games and away games. We are happy to have him and we are aware of his importance on and off the pitch. »
Doncic and Slovenia remain on a failure at the Euro
Slovenian international since Euro 2017, with a gold medal and a place in the competition’s five majors, Luka Doncic then came very close to a medal at the Olympic Games (ah, this against Batum in semi final…) and then failed in the quarter-finals of the Euro in September against a surprising team from Poland. There is no doubt that the Slovenian star will want to catch up in 2023. If Doncic is in the same form, in August-September 2023, as since the start of the NBA season with Dallas (33.5 points, 9.1 rebounds and 8.1 average passes!), Slovenia can dream of a medal. But the United States, Spain, France, Australia, Canada or Greece also dream of it…
