While Antoine Dupont defended the title won in 2021, Irish third-line Josh van der Flier was voted the best player in the world at the World Rugby Awards. New Zealander Ruahei Demant, meanwhile, is crowned best player in the world.
Antoine Dupont did not do the double. While he was on the list of nominees, the scrum half of the XV of France and Toulouse was ultimately not once again voted best player in the world. Champions Cup finalist with Leinster and spearheading a world number 1 Irish team at the end of 2022, third row Josh van der Flier won the votes and received his trophy at a ceremony held this Sunday in Monaco.
A few weeks after the world title won on their land by the Black Ferns, Ruhaei Demant won the trophy for best player in the world, thus succeeding the English Zoe Aldcroft. If it was not honored during the presentation of these trophies, French rugby is still represented in the XV of the year concocted by World Rugby. In effect, Grégory Alldritt and Antoine Dupont take their place in the men’s selection when Madoussou Fall and Laure Sansus join the women’s.

Galthié beaten for the title of coach of the year
The XV of France, which ended the year 2022 undefeated after its success over Japan this Sunday, was also in the running for the trophy for coach of the year with Fabien Galthié. World Rugby having decided not to make a distinction between the male and female selections, the success of the Black Ferns during the Women’s World Cup weighed heavily and allowed Wayne Smith, their coach, to be awarded.
After having shone under the colors of Grenoble and having notably enabled Italy to win in Wales during the last 6 Nations Tournament, Ange Capuozzo was voted male revelation of the year when New Zealand’s Ruby Nui achieved this distinction for women’s rugby. This ceremony also made it possible to reward the Irish Terry Kennedy and the Australian Charlotte Caslick as the best players in the world in rugby 7.
