This Wednesday morning, Charles Caudrelier (Maxi Edmond de Rothschild) triumphed on the Route du Rhum in the Ultims category. By winning in less than seven days, the French skipper set a record for this 12th edition.
The consecration for Charles Caudrelier. This Wednesday morning, shortly after 10 a.m. in France, the skipper of the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild won the 12th edition of the Route du Rhum in the Ultimate class. The Parisian by birth also offered himself the luxury of signing a new crossing record by crossing the finish line in Pointe-à-Pitre (Guadeloupe) after 6 days 19 hours 47 minutes and 25 seconds. At the same time, the person concerned erases the mark established by Francis Joyon (Idec Sport) in 2018, which was 7 days 14 hours 21 minutes and 47 seconds.
Leading much of the race, Caudrelier has therefore tamed the Atlantic after having long been in the fight for the final victory with François Gabart (SVR-Lazartigue). However, the 48-year-old skipper had experienced a great scare shortly after the start of Saint-Malo when he was penalized four hours for having veiled the start of the Route du Rhum, before seeing the jury finally cancel this decision. After notably the Transat Jacques-Vabre in 2021 with Franck Cammas, Caudrelier is adding another prestigious line to his record on the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild.
“It was an almost perfect race”
« I’m not even tired actually, surprisingly. The race was exhausting, but I managed to find my rhythm well. The first 24 hours were tough. Then, I was so mad, I wanted to win this race so badly for so many reasons., for the whole story of this team, of this boat… It’s true that I’ve been dreaming about it since I was a kid and I couldn’t do it. It was a huge frustration… and one day, three years ago, I was offered this dream. I have so many people to thank, who supported me and believed in me. (…) I often say it’s a Formula 1 team and I’m the driver on Sundays. But all the rest of the year, there are people who work so that I have a perfect boat. I didn’t have a problem on the boat, it was an almost perfect race I want to say “, reacted the skipper, shortly after the finish line, at the microphone of the organizers of the Route du Rhum.
