The WRC rally in Japan, the last meeting of this 2022 season, was won by Belgian Thierry Neuville (Hyundai).
End of the 2022 season. This Sunday, the WRC rally in Japan, thirteenth and last round of the specialty world championship, but back on the world calendar for the very first time since 2010, was won by the Belgian Thierry Neuville, resident of the Hyundai team, on an unprecedented route, near the center of the country. The pilot triumphed in front of his teammate, the Estonian Ott Tänak. As for the Toyota team, it saves the honor with a third place finish, with the local, the Japanese Takamoto Katsuta. This is the third WRC podium for this one. This Sunday was the very last morning of the race. And Thierry Neuville was not surprised.
Evans’ SS16 puncture was a turning point
However, after SS15, the very first special of this day, the Belgian’s lead was very small over his first pursuer, the Briton Elfyn Evans. Indeed, only six small tenths separated the two men. But on SS16 it all came together, as Evans punctured one of his tires. This forced him to abandon any possible dream of a final victory. IThis is the second victory of the season for the Belgian, already winner, just this fall, on the side of Greece. The Hyundai driver has 17 wins since the start of his career. In this rally, the Frenchman Sébastien Ogier, eight-time world champion in the specialty, took fourth place overall.
