Launched last year, the Goalscorer of the Year trophy awarded during the Ballon d’Or edition is changing its name.
After the Yachine Trophy (which rewards the best goalkeeper) and the Kopa Trophy (which rewards the best young player), a third individual distinction was added last year as part of the Ballon d’Or. Robert Lewandowskifailing to afford the supreme reward, left with the Goalscorer of the Year trophy, simply being the top scorer of the year.
The group L’Equipe has changed the name of the award to the Müller Trophy, to pay tribute to Gerd Müller, the record scorer for Bayern and the German selection in the 1970s. The Müller Trophy will thus be awarded to the player who scored the more goals with his club and his national team during the past season. It will again be Lewandowski, author of 50 goals with Bayern and 7 with Poland.
