Hubert Hurkacz holds the first ticket to the final of the Masters 1000 in Montreal. The Pole beat Casper Ruud, the Roland-Garros finalist, even though he had lost the first set (5-7, 6-3, 6-2).
If Simona Halep is the big sun of the week in Toronto, Hubert Hurkacz dazzles Montreal. After beating Nick Kyrgios on Friday in the quarter-finals, inflicting on the Australian his first defeat since the Wimbledon final, the great Pole overthrew Casper Ruud in the semis despite losing the first set (5-7, 6-3 , 6-2). Exactly like Halep earlier, and further west in Canada… It’s his fourth straight win in three sets.
“I tried to stay in the game, he played really amazing tennis and he was the best at the start, especially in a set and a half to start. I tried to stay in it as best I could. And like Halep against Jessica Pegula in Toronto, persistence paid off. Already a winner in Miami last year, Hurkacz could therefore win a second Masters 1000 in his career.
