The Tour of Burgos, a stage race serving as preparation before the Tour of Spain which starts on August 19, ended this Saturday with the queen stage leading the peloton from Lermas to Lagunas de Neila. With an arrival at altitude (at 1872 meters) at the end of the 170 kilometers of the course, the expected explanation between the strong men took place. A fight in which Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and Hugh Carthy (EF Education-EasyPost) took part. But the Spanish veteran as well as the defending champion gave up just under two kilometers from the summit on the sections with the highest percentages of ascent.

The group of contenders for victory has narrowed to three elements with Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates), Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) and the overall leader, Pavel Sivakov (Ineos-Grenadiers). The latter did not resist the ultimate sharp offensive of the Portuguese in the last hectometres. Neither did the Spaniard who crossed the finish line just one second behind the Team Emirates climber. As for the Frenchman, 3rd this Saturday, he is only six seconds behind. Enough to keep his leader’s chair and thus win his first competition this year. On the other hand, it is his 3rd coronation in a stage race in his career as a professional cyclist after his victories in the Tour of the Alps and the Tour of Poland in 2019.
