The Montreal painting

Check out the Montreal Masters 1000 draw, which will be the first major step on the way to the US Open. In the absence of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz intend to shine.

The hard court season is about to get off to a serious start. Like every even-numbered year, Montreal welcomes the cream of men’s tennis for the first of two Masters 1000 on the program ahead of the US Open. Winner in the final against Reilly Opelka passed him to Toronto, Daniil Medvedev will be present at the meeting as seeded number 1 in order to continue his preparation after the Los Cabos tournament. Exempted from the first round, the Russian could have a lot to do with Sebastian Baez or Nick Kyrgios who will be his opponent in the second round. On the other side of the table, in the absence of Alexander Zverev and Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz will be number 2 in the hierarchy. The Spaniard, who will participate in the tournament for the first time in his career, will start either against Vasek Pospisil or against Tommy Paul. Casper Ruud, who will start his week against Alex Molcan or Mackenzie McDonald, has been placed in the same part of the table as Daniil Medvedev. Stefanos Tsitsipas, who will definitely face a player from qualifying, will be on the way to Carlos Alcaraz.

Monfils and Bonzi not varnished

Absent from the ATP circuit since his elimination by Novak Djokovic in the second round of the Masters 1000 in Madrid, Gaël Monfils will resume competition in Montreal. However, the draw was not kind to the Parisian. Indeed, the 20th in the world will have to face in the first round the 2021 finalist Reilly Opelka, seeded number 14. before a potential second round against Aslan Karatsev or Maxime Cressy then an eighth final that could put him in the grip of Stefanos Tsitsipas. Second Frenchman to enter directly into the main draw, Benjamin Bonzi will have to face Frances Tiafoe from the start before possibly crossing swords with Andy Murray, recipient of an invitation, or the No. 10 seed Taylor Fritz. Among the beautiful posters of the first round, we can note those between Denis Shapovalov and Alex de Minaur or the 100% Croatian duel between Marin Cilic and Borna Coric. Hope of Canadian tennis, current 238th in the world, Alexis Galarneau will play in Montreal the very first tournament of his career on the main circuit with a duel against Grigor Dimitrov, seeded number 16, to start.
