Desperate for a first victory in the Tour de France, the French riders are on their way to setting an infamous record.
Only one person is missing… If the QuickStep formation knew how to ignore the absence of Julian Alaphilippe to shine on the roads of the Tour de France, winning two stage successes thanks to Yves Lampaert and Fabio Jakobsen, it is quite different French cycling. Two days before the end of the Tour de France, the French riders are indeed still looking for a stage victory.
And this 18th stage enters and appears as the last chance for the riders of France to finally open their counters and thus avoid making this 2022 edition the third Tour de France in history without the slightest success of French stage after 1926 and 1999. The chances of a victory for a Frenchman in the time trial seem nil and it is not much better for the last stage on the Champs-Élysées, traditionally reserved for a sprinter.
The 18th stage is also the last opportunity for the French riders to avoid a terrible record, that of the number of stages without a victory for a Tricolore. A Frenchman has not raised his arms in effect on the Tour de France since the victory, last year, of Julian Alaphilippe during the first stage, that is to say for 38 stages. The Blues are therefore one unit away from the record dearth in this area, the 39 stages which were linked between the successes of Jacky Durand in 1998 and Christophe Agnolutto in 2000.
