“A runner’s dream”

Going on the offensive in the last two kilometers, Christophe Laporte went to Cahors to seek the first French stage victory in the Tour de France 2022. Discover the reactions of the main players in the race.

Christophe Laporte (FRA/Jumbo-Visma) – Winner of the stage

“100 kilometers from the finish, Wout Van Aert told me that he didn’t feel strong enough to sprint, and that it was up to me. The last time he told me that was in Paris-Nice where I won. In the end, our mission was to secure the position of Jonas Vingegaard. It was Wout Van Aert who took care of everything and three kilometers from the finish, I heard in the headset that I had carte blanche. There was a small chicane on which a small break was made, I took the opportunity to do the jump with the three riders in front. Then I accelerated to the 500 meters, I turned around and I had made a hole on them. I crashed a little at the end, but it was still enough, I was even able to savor the passage of the line. It’s huge for me. Winning a stage in the Tour de France is every rider’s dream. I didn’t come with this objective, I was already very happy with everything I was able to do for the team on this Tour. And if I had to work for Wout Van Aert today (Friday), that suited me very well too. I thought I might have an opportunity in week three, and she showed up. It doesn’t happen every day. It is also important not to leave the homeland empty-handed, but if there had already been French victories, I would have been very happy to win too. If it was able to please many viewers in front of their screens, it’s even better. »

Jasper Philipsen (BEL/Alpecin-Deceuninck) – 2eme

“The end was very chaotic. Maybe I made a mistake, I think I didn’t negotiate the last corners well, it cost me the victory today (Friday), but there is still another chance on Sunday. Christophe Laporte took us by surprise, we were rather concentrated on other riders who were in the peloton, there were not many teams who had teammates. »

Florian Sénéchal (FRA/Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) – 4th

“In the last kilometer, Fabio Jakobsen told me that I was going to sprint, he couldn’t take it anymore. Unfortunately, there weren’t enough guys to get me started. In the finale, it was the legs that spoke. Christophe Laporte did that as a finisher. He maneuvered well in the final and his team was ahead. He was strong, there is nothing to say. It’s a great victory, I’m happy for him. »

Tadej Pogacar (SLO/UAE Team Emirates) – 5th and white jersey

“It was still a fast stage. A little boring at first, but then it got more fun. The finish was both tough and fast, so I pushed hard, doing my best. It’s been a day longer towards the end. I suffered a puncture in the final, but with my teammates helping me come back, it was sorted in no time. For tomorrow’s time trial (Saturday), I know I’ve had a tiring Tour and it’s a difficult time trial. So I don’t know what I will be capable of, but I know that I will give everything. I reconnoitered the course twice. It’s tough, and the coating doesn’t yield much. It will still be a fast course, with two small hills at the end. I don’t expect a huge surprise, but you never know. »

Hugo Hofstetter (FRA / Arkéa-Samsic) – 8th

“It was a sprint a bit like I like them. I found myself in the wheel of Janse van Rensburg, who was throwing for Caleb Ewan, but when he pulled away I saw there was a hole behind it. I went, but I thought there was less than that left, and when I saw 400 yards, I knew it was going to be a long way to the line. Afterwards, I can’t have too many regrets because I did a real sprint today (Friday). Christophe Laporte made the jump at the perfect time. When I threw, I saw that I stumbled to come back on him. It makes me happy to see him win because he’s a Frenchman and I also raced with him at Cofidis. »

Jonas Vingegaard (DAN / Jumbo-Visma) – 13th and yellow jersey

“It was a stressful day so I was quite nervous. But the guys took care of me perfectly, it was important with the wind blowing from the side. I am very happy that we were able to win Christophe Laporte, he deserves it so much. He was there for three weeks, the fact that he can have his stage also shows what kind of team we are. I recognized the course of the time trial in April. It is generally quite technical, especially on the first ten kilometers. I don’t have a strategy, I’m just going to do whatever I can, hoping it’s enough. »

Wout Van Aert (BEL/Jumbo-Visma) – 71eme et maillot vert

“We showed again how strong the team is. This stage was very fast and after the efforts of yesterday (Thursday), I didn’t feel capable of sprinting to win, although normally it was a sprint for me. So in the middle of the stage, I told Christophe Laporte that it was up to him to go. We can’t talk about rewards because cycling doesn’t work like that. But with all he has done for me, especially in the spring, it means a lot to see him win too. He showed the world how strong he is. I tell him often, but he doesn’t want to believe me. I’ve known him for years, long before we were teammates. I have raced with him a lot this year, first I saw that he is strong on the flat and to take the sprints, but he is also very good in the mountains, especially on the small climbs, as he has shown in recent days. Now there are two stages left, last year I won the time trial and the Champs-Elysées. That doesn’t mean I can still do it, but I can try. Whatever comes next will be a bonus. »
