Palermo: Garcia gets away with it

After a completely failed first round, Caroline Garcia was able to raise her head to overthrow Elisabetta Cocciaretto and qualify for the quarter-finals of the WTA tournament in Palermo.

Caroline Garcia has come a long way! As absent at the start of the match against Elisabetta Cocciaretto, the Frenchwoman was finally able to imitate Diane Parry and validate her ticket for the quarter-finals in Palermo. Because, facing the Italian, the Habs did everything upside down during a first round to forget. Winning only one point on her opponent’s serve, Caroline Garcia was feverish on her serve. The result was three break points converted for three obtained for Elisabetta Cocciaretto.

In just over 20 minutes, the 111th player in the world won a one-sided set and took the lead in this round of 16. An advantage that the Italian could have extended at the start of the second round. Indeed, five times in all of the first two service games of the Frenchwoman, the Transalpine had five break points. But Caroline Garcia dismissed them all before converting her first and reviving completely in this meeting.

Unsinkable Garcia

Leading then four games to one, the Habs regained confidence and no longer left the slightest space to their opponent. When serving to equalize with one set everywhere, the Lyonnaise had an alert with a break ball quickly dismissed. Then the first set point was the good one. Back to back, the two players then closed the game and the last round was more closed, with no visible breach giving hope of a break. But, with wear, it was Caroline Garcia who made her opponent give in.

On the third occasion, the Habs were able to take the service of their opponent and thus lead five games to four. Committing to win the match, the 48th in the world was pushed to its limits but found the solutions to seal the fate of the match at the first opportunity (0-6, 6-3, 6-4 in 1h56 ‘). Elina Avanesyan, from the qualifications, or Lucia Bronzetti will be her opponent for a place in the semi-finals.
