Osaka no longer has a coach

Belgian coach Wim Fissette has announced the end of his collaboration with Naomi Osaka, whom he trained for two and a half years.

Their collaboration began in January 2020, it is now over, after experiencing very highs and very lows. Belgian coach Wim Fissette (42) and Japanese player Naomi Osaka (24) have decided to separate, in the heart of this summer 2022. It was the coach who made it known via his account Instagram. « It’s been a privilege to coach Naomi and watch her grow into the champion that she is. She passed on the passion for the sport to a new generation and convinced them to speak up about what this generation believes in. It was incredible to have had a role to play in this epic. I only wish you the best and can’t wait to begin my next chapter,” he wrote.

Two Grand Slam titles… and a fall in the standings

Wim Fissette started coaching Naomi Osaka, then world No. Then the coronavirus pandemic arrived, but the Japanese made a successful return to competition, with a final at the New York tournament, preparatory to the US Open, and above all a victory at the US Open, the second of her career after 2018. She then gave up Roland-Garros and finished the season world No. 3. On her way, Naomi Osaka won the Australian Open 2021, then played the quarters in Miami. And then the machine jammed. Osaka had a string of defeats on clay, and eventually forfeited her second round at Roland-Garros, citing mental health issues. Back at the Tokyo Olympics, where she lit the Olympic cauldron, Osaka lost in the round of 16 and then only won two games until the end of the season, finishing 13th in the world. And 2022 has not really smiled on her so far, even if she claims to be mentally better. The Japanese played only six tournaments, with a final in the key (in Miami) but won only two Grand Slam matches (in Melbourne) and even fell to 78th in the world. Now 38th, she will return to San Jose in early August. It will therefore be without Wim Fissette, who will now have to find another player, after having already coached Clijsters, Lisicki, Halep, Azarenka, Kvitova, Errani, Konta and Kerber. Why not Karolina Pliskova, who has just separated from Sascha Bajin?
