Tour de France: Van Aert and Cort Nielsen, the duo of the moment

In search of a victory in this Tour de France 2022, Wout van Aert distinguished himself this Tuesday by winning the 4th stage in Calais and took the opportunity at the same time to consolidate his two jerseys, like Magnus Cort Nielsen.

4th stage – Dunkirk – Calais (171.5km) – Tuesday July 5, 2022

The life of jerseys

Maillot jaune : Wout van Aert (BEL/Jumbo-Visma)

After having had to settle for three times in the runner-up position in Denmark, Wout van Aert got everyone to agree this Wednesday by winning alone during the 4th stage thanks to a lethal attack in the last kilometers, which left everyone on the spot. Between his eight-second lead over his pursuers at the finish and the ten-second bonus due to his success, the Belgian offered himself the luxury of putting his rivals 18 seconds ahead of the start of the day. Overall, he is now 25 seconds ahead of his runner-up and compatriot, Yves Lampaert (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl). At 32 seconds, we find Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) to complete the podium.

Maillot vert : Wout van Aert (BEL/Jumbo-Visma)

As during the 3rd stage of this Tour de France 2022, Wout van Aert not only consolidated his leader’s yellow jersey, he also did the same in the green jersey classification. Victorious this Tuesday in Calais, the Belgian took advantage that his main rival for the moment, Fabio Jakobsen (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl), was far from the mark (13th) to increase his lead there too. While he was 17 lengths ahead of the Dutchman before this 4th stage, the rider from the Jumbo-Visma formation created a nice gap by winning with now 61 points more (170 against 109). Peter Sagan (5th of the day) is now on the third step of the podium (80), while Christophe Laporte is 4th (66), tied with Jasper Philipsen. Unable to combine two jerseys, van Aert will once again give up his green tunic to Jakobsen during the 5th stage.

Polka Dot Jersey: Magnus Cort Nielsen (DAN / EF Education-Easypost)

Almost faultless for Magnus Cort Nielsen. After four stages in this Grande Boucle 2022, the Dane has pocketed 11 of the 12 points put into play during the first category 4 passes which were on the menu. At the top of the standings ahead of Wout van Aert, the first to cross the Côte du Cap Blanc-Nez, the rider from the EF Education-Easypost training did not even try to refuel during the last difficulty of the day and was wisely returned to the front row. After the 5th stage, Cort Nielsen will have to work again to keep his tunic.

White jersey: Tadej Pogacar (SLO/UAE Team Emirates)

As during the previous stage in Denmark, Tadej Pogacar spent a rather quiet day in the peloton and did not try more than that to show off, before a 5th stage which promises to be much more demanding. As a result, the Slovenian from the UAE Team Emirates formation therefore logically remains at the top of the classification for the white jersey of the best rider under 25 in the Tour de France 2022. Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) and Florian Vermeersch (Lotto-Soudal) complete the podium.

Team classification: Jumbo-Visma (PBS)

Thanks in particular to the good performances this Tuesday from Wout van Aert (the winner of the day) and Christophe Laporte (3rd), the Jumbo-Visma formation finished at the top of this 4th stage between Dunkirk and Calais, ahead of most of the teams, except Cofidis (1’26”) and BixeExchange-Jayco (1’33”), who are now eight seconds behind them in this ranking. Thus, the Dutch team consolidates its lead and its riders keep the bibs and the yellow helmets at the same time.

Fighter of the day: Anthony Perez (FRA/Codifis)

In the breakaway of the day with Magnus Cort Nielsen, the Frenchman was logically rewarded for his selflessness. Indeed, if the Dane gave up after acquiring his 11th point in the climbers’ classification, Perez tried to continue the adventure alone but could only see the damage when the Jumbo-Visma accelerated at the head of the peloton in the coast of Cap Blanc-Nez. He will therefore have the red bib during the long-awaited stage on the cobblestones on Wednesday.
