Still no China on the calendar

The WTA unveiled its schedule on Monday until October 23, and no tournament will take place in China, as announced. The location of the Masters will be known later.

The WTA season has been in full swing for four and a half months, but it’s still unclear where it will end. While the ATP has unveiled its calendar for the entire season for many weeks, with several tournaments in China in the fall, as was the case before the coronavirus pandemic, the WTA is groping its way. The body that manages women’s tennis no longer wants to organize tournaments in China until further notice, not because of the covid, but because of the vagueness surrounding the situation of Shuai Peng, who has not spoken since. his interview with The Team during the Beijing Olympics, and of which we do not know if she is free in her movements and her words. This Monday, the WTA has in any case unveiled its schedule from the end of the US Open until October 23, with several new features, including tournaments in countries where the Top 10 players come from.

Poland, Estonia, Tunisia… on the program

Already before the US Open, the clay court tournament in Gdynia, Poland, the country of world No. 1 Iga Swiatek, is relocated to the capital, Warsaw (WTA 250), the week of July 25. Then, after the New York Grand Slam, the Japanese city of Osaka (WTA 250) will host a tournament the week of September 12, then the players will travel to Tokyo (WTA 500) or Seoul (WTA 250) the following week. The Asian tour will therefore be very short. Back to Europe then, with a tournament in Tallinn (WTA 250) in Estonia, the country of world No. 5 Anett Kontaveit, the week of September 26. Two tournaments will take place the following week, in Ostrava (WTA 500) in the Czech Republic and in Monastir (WTA 250) in Tunisia, the country of world No. 6 Ons Jabeur. The week of October 10, players wishing to return to the United States can go and compete in a WTA 500 in San Diego or can stay in Europe, near Cluj-Napoca in Romania for a WTA 250. Finally, the city of Guadalajara, Mexico, which organized the Masters last year replacing Shenzhen, will host a WTA 1000 the week of October 17. The Masters will begin on October 31, and its location will be revealed “in due course”. So the suspense remains…
