Hockey-World: Second defeat for the Blues

After beating Kazakhstan on Sunday in a crucial match for the maintenance of the Finnish World Cup, the French men’s ice hockey team lost 3-2 against Germany.

After their 2-1 victory over Kazakhstan on Sunday, which allowed them to take a step towards staying in the world group, the French men’s ice hockey team dreamed of striking a big blow against Germany, eighth in finalist of the last Olympic Games in Beijing, to claim better than maintenance in this competition (why not a quarter-final?). But the Blues were brought down to earth on Monday in Helsinki, with a 3-2 defeat.

The Germans, in numerical superiority after the temporary exclusion of Jordan Perret after only 89 seconds of play, opened the scoring in the 3rd minute by Daniel Fischbuch, alone in front of goalkeeper Sebastian Ylönen, but the Blues reacted twelve minutes later, also in a power-play situation, by the prodigy of the Columbus Blue Jackets, Alexandre Texier, on a pass from Tim Bozon. However, three minutes later, Germany took control through Alexander Ehl on a deflected shot to lead 2-1 at the end of the first period.

Another very important game on Wednesday

There was only one goal in the second, and it was the work of a Frenchman, Hugo Gallet, served by Charles Bertrand, in the 32nd minute (2-2). But the experience of the Germans ended up paying off, with a goal signed Leo Pfoederl in the 46th. The Blues did not manage to equalize during the last quarter of an hour and they must therefore bow, at the end of a match where they shot 18 times on goal, against 30 for the Germans.

Beaten 4-1 by Germany in the last meeting between the two teams, at the 2019 World Cup, France have made progress, but not yet enough to win. France remain fifth in the group, before the very important match against Italy on Wednesday, which could allow them to ensure maintenance.
