Geneva: Gasquet will challenge Medvedev

Richard Gasquet started his Geneva tournament well, with a victory in two sets against John Millman. The Biterrois will have the opportunity to challenge Daniil Medveded in the next round, who will return to competition.

Richard Gasquet will arrive at Roland-Garros with at least six victories on clay in his legs this season. The almost 36-year-old Biterrois, quarter-finalist in Marrakech and Estoril and eighth-finalist in Aix-en-Provence (Challenger) qualified for the round of 16 in Geneva. Gasquet, author of 4 aces, 2 double faults and 50% of first serves, saved the three break points that the Australian got (two at the end of the first set, one when he served for the match ). He broke his opponent at the start of the match and at 5-3 in the first set, then at 2-1 and 4-1 in the second, to afford this convincing victory. And in the round of 16, the Biterrois will be entitled to a huge test, since he will have the honor of being Daniil Medvedev’s first opponent for his big return to competition since his herniated disc which has kept him away from the courts since end of March.

The Russian leads 2-1 in his confrontations against the French. But Gasquet will have the advantage of not missing matches on earth, unlike the former world No. 1. Remember that even if he wins the Swiss tournament, the Russian will not be able to return to the throne of the ATP next Monday, Novak Djokovic having enough of a lead.
