Djokovic rejoins Ruud

Novak Djokovic beat Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets in the quarter-finals of the Masters 1000 in Rome and is therefore guaranteed to remain world No. 1 next Monday. The Serbian, very convincing, will face Casper Ruud for a place in the final.

And 999 victories on the ATP circuit for Novak Djokovic! The Serb continues to write his legend a little more, and he qualified this Friday for a thirteenth final at the Masters 1000 in Rome. Opposed for the first time in his career to Felix Auger-Aliassime (21 years old, 9th), the world No. 1 delivered a very solid match, to finally win 7-5, 7-6 in 2:11. Even if he sometimes had a few lapses in concentration which allowed the Canadian to stay in the game, the man with 20 Grand Slam tournaments had the last word, without shaking too much. In the first set, he was the first player to break, to lead 5-3, but “FAA” immediately reacted to come back at 5-5. However, Djokovic made his experience speak by taking the opposing serve again at 6-5 to pocket the set.

Djokovic guaranteed to remain on the throne on Monday

The second set was quite similar, with the Serb breaking thanks to a magnificent lob to lead 4-2, then missing a match point at 5-2 on Auger-Aliassime’s serve. But the Serb may have seen himself winning a little too quickly, because at 5-3, he lost his service following a failed backhand, and the Canadian managed to push him to the tie-break. A tie-break where the world No. 1 was not worried and quietly won 7-1. This 999th career victory allows him to secure the place of world No. 1, while Daniil Medvedev (who will return to the circuit next week in Geneva) could still hope to recover it next Monday. In the semi-final, Novak Djokovic will face Casper Ruud, a player to whom he has not left a single set in two confrontations (semi-final in Rome in 2020, group stage of the Masters in 2021). The 1000th victory, which would allow him to join Connors, Federer, Lendl and Nadal in history, is therefore very possible…
