China pushed aside, Chorzow as reinforcements

Faced with a deteriorating health situation in China, World Athletics has confirmed that the two stages of the Diamond League scheduled for Shanghai and Shenzhen next summer have been canceled. The Chorzow meeting joins the main circuit of international athletics.

Once again, the coronavirus pandemic poses a problem for the Diamond League. After a 2020 season reduced to its simplest expression and devoid of general classification, the 2021 season was able to proceed almost normally with the cancellations of the stages in Rabat, Shanghai and Shenzhen. For 2022, World Athletics have also had to revise their plans for the main world circuit. Through a press release, the governing body of athletics confirmed a “restructuring of the one-day meeting season”. The reason for such a change is, unsurprisingly, the strict health restrictions in force in China, both in terms of travel and the quarantine imposed on people wishing to enter the country. As a result, like last year, the Diamond League will not stop in Shanghai on July 30 and then in Shenzhen a week later.

Poland joins the Diamond League schedule

If the Diamond League season will be well launched on May 13 in Doha, there will finally be twelve meetings before the grand final scheduled for September 7 and 8 in the mythical Letzigrund in Zürich. Indeed, if the date initially scheduled for the Shanghai stage will not be recovered by another meeting, a solution has been found for the one assigned to Shenzhen. If there will be a gap of just over a month in the Diamond League 2022 season schedule, the athletes are now expected on August 6 in Chorzow for the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial. While it was on the program of the Continental Tour Gold, the Polish meeting is promoted on an exceptional basis, which will have a program containing most of the events to be contested during the Chinese stages. The objective is to maintain a minimum of four competitions for each discipline before the final. As a result, the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial also held in Chorzow is changing from the Continental Tour Silver category to Continental Tour Gold.
