Stefanos Tsitsipas beat John Isner in four sets on Friday night. The Greek finds himself in the round of 16 at Roland Garros for the third consecutive year.
Stefanos Tsitsipas won against John Isner. In the cold and, sometimes, the rain of the evening session of Court Philippe-Chatrier, the number 5 seed of Roland-Garros ended up having the last word on Friday against the American. However, the Greek approached this meeting as a “diesel” because it was John Isner who had the first two break points of the match. But, in a balanced first round which was to be settled in the decisive game, the 34th player in the world took advantage of a missed serve from Stefanos Tsitsipas to break a shutout to win the round without conceding a point.
The world number 5, after missing three break opportunities in the fourth game of the second set, fell back to the wall when the American had a chance to take his serve and then engage for the set. This break point, Stefanos Tsitsipas was able to save it and then go and find the break himself and return to a round everywhere on a last shutout. In a batting duel, having an entire inning without a break point came as no surprise and that is what happened in the third set.
However, faced with a John Isner who began to show signs of fatigue, the Greek took his chance to gain the upper hand, which proved to be definitive. Stefanos Tsitsipas decided to step up at the start of the fourth set with the entry break. John Isner went out of his way to resist but it ended up being only a meager serve game won.
Chaining three consecutive games again, the number 5 seed of the French Open validates his ticket for the round of 16 (5-7, 6-3, 7-6, 6-1 in 2h41 ‘) and will find the Spaniard Pablo Carreño Busta.
